Let's Weave a Colorful Sock Rug

Using ‘pre-dressed’ looms, this introductory level half-day weaving class allows the beginning or experienced weaver to learn or relearn the basics of using a floor loom. You will quickly move on to take strips of colorful sock remnants, chained together, and turn them into a bright, colorful, thick cotton rug. These rugs are suitable for any area in your home, from bathmats to children’s rooms, or anywhere you wish to add a bright accent. Enjoy the camaraderie of others in a relaxed learning environment and walk away with a one-of-a-kind sock rug.

Tuition includes all materials.

Let's Weave a Rag Place-mat

Students will learn how to weave place-mats using strips of recycled material. These place-mats are washable and utilitarian and should last for years. This course is geared toward beginners; the looms will be pre-dressed so come and join the fun and learn a whole new hobby.

Felted Twig Cowl

Felt a funky, organic accessory that can be worn as a Cowl or Scarflette. Using dyed, soft Merino Wool, students will learn a wet felting technique based upon an open layout to create a soft, versatile neck piece for warmth and a very contemporary look. This workshop is beginner friendly!

Students should bring to class: 2 Old Towels, a heavy or waterproof apron, and wear sleeves you can push up.

Hobo Quilt

This is a great project for the first time quilter and also for the experienced quilter. The blocks are layered and quilted before being sewn together which makes this a very fast project to complete. This is a good opportunity to use up some of your stash or to go shop for more. Everyone will want to snuggle up with this super comfort "Hobo" quilt! Good for beginner to intermediate quilters.

Adirondack Landscapes in Felt

Felt is a perfect medium to capture the essence of the Adirondacks in a landscape. In this workshop we will use natural fibers and learn a simple wet felting technique to make our felted “sketches”. You will discover the unique felting characteristics of various fibers and how to use them to their best effect: wool batt, wool roving, nepps and locks, mohair, silk hankies, silk top and silk blends, linen and hemp. Students should bring two old hand towels; all other materials will be supplied. Wear sleeves that can be rolled up out of your way to stay dry; a heavy cloth or waterproof apron is helpful too. Appropriate for all levels of experience.

"Cathedral Window" Quilt Block

This great "take-along" project is back. Come learn the art of folding fabric and hand stitching to create a beautiful family treasure. We will review the process from start to finish. Crazy Quilt

In "Crazy Quilt" construction there is no set pattern, no worrying about "Are the corners going to match correctly?" No two blocks will look the same, therefore no two quilts will be the same. Your biggest decision today will be what size block to make and how big are you going to make your quilt. Crazy quilts have been made with two types of foundations, muslin and paper. Get ready to have fun and choose your foundation. Then, pull your first bit of fabric from your stash and begin.

Embroidered Sampler

If you've admired stitched samplers of all kinds, then here's your chance to make one of your very own. Create a lovely 10-12" round stitched sampler of a pastoral scene using a variety of threads and embroidery stitches. In this class, you will learn the stem stitch, satin stitch, blanket stitch, lazy daisy, and French Knot, among others. While you may not finish the project in class, you'll have learned all the stitches needed to complete the sampler at home. Whether for your home or to be given as a gift, this lovely sampler can be hung with or without a frame.

Weave A Novelty Yarn Scarf on a Floor Loom

Weaving with Novelty Yarns is all the rage! Fibers originally only used by knitters are now being incorporated into woven items - like scarves. The looms will be prepared for you, with a strong warp of either tensel or rayon, interspersed with various random pieces of chunky, shiny, thicker fibers. You will choose your complementing colors and learn to weave them into a soft one-of-a-kind scarf. At the end of the class you will be shown how to finish your piece with either a damascus edging or braided fringe. Excellent class for beginners as well as experienced weavers alike!

Shibori Dyeing with Indigo

You will love dyeing with indigo! In this class you will learn the process of indigo dyeing, from making the indigo stock solution to managing the indigo vat, then proceeding to the process of dyeing. Through demonstration and many samples, you will learn the art of Japanese shaped resist dyeing - shibori. Stitched shibori (mokume, ori-uni, karamatsu), kumo (spider web), arashi (pole wrapping), and others will be demonstrated. You will be given samples of silk, linen, cotton, and wool to dye, and one silk scarf so you can create your own original designs. You will leave with samples, an original scarf, and a desire to keep dyeing! Students should bring a waterproof apron, rubber gloves, waterproof marker, notebook and pen, hand sewing needles, scissors, one spool of tan Coats Dual Duty XP thread, one spool of heavy string (cotton rug warp suggested), a 5-gallon bucket, and a 2-4 foot length of 4" PVC pipe (available pre-cut at hardware stores).

Beginning Sewing - Pillow Case

This class is for anyone (minimum age 10) who would like to learn how to use a sewing machine to sew. We will start at the very beginning to ensure that all students learn the basics of sewing on a machine. Create something useful at the same time - a pillow case. Imagine how proud you will be to sleep on a pillow case that you made yourself! This class is for beginning sewers.

Inkle Weaving

Inkle weaving is a wonderful way to try your hand at weaving. If you are not sure you are ready for weaving on a floor loom or a tapestry loom then Inkle Weaving might be just the thing! Learn to weave on these small tabletop Inkle looms, creating narrow bands of woven fibers for items such as bookmarkers, sashes, straps, and more. This is a great way to experience and learn basic weaving skills that can be applied to other types of weaving. You’ll learn how to prepare the loom for weaving, then pick your colors and start weaving. If you've ever said “I would love to learn, but I just don’t have the time,” this is the fun class for you. With a small deposit, students may borrow a loom to finish their project at home.

Create a Beaded Clutch

Native Americans were very active in the history of this area. They were the greeters of the first Europeans and, as a result, their lives were forever changed. The use of European materials greatly influenced the crafts of Eastern Native Americans. Learn the history of the traditional craft of Native American beading. The skills and techniques of applying beads to fabric will be emphasized, as well as the European influence of cloth and beads on the lifestyle of Eastern Native American Indians. You will finish a small beaded pouch indicative of the Eastern Native American Indian style.

We will work with a simple strip pieced assembly for a completed project in one session. Eco Printing

Discover the beauty and surprise of eco printing using flowers and leaves to make beautiful marks and color on fabrics and paper. We will take a walk in the woods to gather our materials and inspiration, then spend the day creating our works of art and beauty. Many samples will be available to view. We will also discuss combining this process with other natural dye processes and techniques. Bring any plant material from home such as onion skins or carrot tops, as well as small rusted iron pieces or clothing made of natural fibers to print on.

Students should bring a waterproof apron, rubber gloves, waterproof marker for labeling, a basket or bucket for collecting materials, a ball of string or cotton rug warp, and a notebook and pen.

Needle Felted Handbag

Create your unique needle felted handbag using washed natural and/or naturally dyed Wensleydale locks. You can make a fabulous and funky bag with these long, curly locks or a textured surface; the choice is yours. You can also choose your background color (white, gray, brown) and add a splash of color with some naturally dyed locks. After your bag "fabric" is completed, we will discuss several ways to stitch your bag (hand or machine), add a lining, and discuss options for straps and closures. Samples will be available for you to view.

Please bring a notebook and pen to class. Needle felting foam/needles/felting tool and camera are optional.

Felted Vase and Flower

Make a colorful, small vase out of wool using the techniques of felting over a resist. Complete your project by adding a unique felted flower or two. Perfect to brighten up a window sill or to give as a holiday gift. This class will cover basic felting techniques that will help with future felting projects.

Learn the art of seamless wet felting to create your own custom made hat. Students will design a plastic resist as their pattern, choose a color palette and turn fiber into a strong fabric that will conform to their particular head size.

Nuno Felt Scarves

Felt is considered to be the earliest form of textile; fragments discovered in Central Asia date back thousands of years. The “nuno felt” technique was developed by Robin’s sister, American-Australian feltmaker, Polly Stirling in the early ’90s. Nuno (named for the Japanese word for “cloth”) grew out of Polly’s experimentation to develop a technique to create a lightweight felt that would be useful in the tropical climate she lived in. Today, nuno felt is widely recognized as one of the most popular felting techniques used by contemporary feltmakers. This class is beginner friendly.
