Traditional Crafts

Fraktur House Blessing

Carol Maher

Try your hand at lettering and decorating a traditional keepsake. These elaborate documents were created by German settlers to commemorate birth, marriage, a new home, the new year and other special events. The word fraktur refers to the brokenness of the Old English lettering style used in them. You will learn the history of fraktur, how to form the upper and lower case letters, and how to color a simple border using a template. You may choose from several sayings, or plan your own wording. Take home a finished 8-1/2" x 11" piece ready to frame as a family heirloom or treasured gift. Students must be 18 years or older.

Introduction to Calligraphy

Carol Maher

Calligraphy is Greek for “beautiful writing.” Our ancestors took pride in a beautifully finished letter, legal document, recipe card, or ledger. In this class you will create a practice journal and watch your own progress toward the final project — a framable quote of your own choosing rendered in calligraphy on parchment. The lyric from a traditional holiday song or a line from a favorite poem could make a memorable gift for someone on your list or a treasure to enjoy in your own home.

Introduction to Coopering: Make Your Own Wooden Bucket

David Salvetti

In this class, students will learn to make a wooden bucket using traditional hand tools and authentic techniques. Beginning with boards, you will finish with a functional bucket to take home. This is an introduction to the historic trade of coopering: the making of containers made from staves held together by hoops. Hand tool experience is helpful, but not required. This class is for students 18 years and older.

Traditional or Arts & Crafts Era Floorcloth

Janet Flinchbaugh

Create your own floorcloth in either a traditional pattern or Arts & Crafts style using environmentally-safe, water-based paints and finishes. The use of painted canvas floor coverings, also known as “oyl cloths”, dates as far back as the 14th century in Europe. People coming to this country were looking for ways to reproduce some of the furnishings they were used to back home. Since resources were limited, worn sails from ships provided them with a base to paint and cover their floors. Over time floorcloths proved themselves to be one of the most durable forms of floor covering used. Centuries old pieces still remain intact with the pattern clearly visible. Come create your own artful and durable floorcloth that will last for generations.

Gourd Art: Student's Choice

Carol Maher

Long ago, gourds were in daily use for such ordinary things as eating, drinking, storing grain and carrying water. This was true not only for the native people of our region but also for those who settled here from Europe. Today we have the luxury of manufacturing household items, but the beauty and charm of natural containers remains. The instructor will provide a variety of shapes and sizes of top quality gourds, tools to cut and clean them, and an array of art supplies that will enable you to create something truly unique. Possibilities include but are not limited to: drum, purse, hinged box, lidded bowl, mask, lantern, bucket, basket, or painted figure. Use your imagination!

Students can bring to class: non-slip gloves, face mask, goggles and a apron. (optional)

Making Hammer and Axe Handles

David Salvetti

The Adirondacks were built with simple tools such as traditional hammers and axes. The hammerhead and axe head were the trade of the local blacksmith but they needed handles to be useful. Our early ancestors created all their tool handles themselves since there were no hardware stores - they just hiked into the woods and found their materials! So come fashion handles just like the early settlers did.
