Woodcarving

How to Get A "Head" in the World of Woodcarving

Gerry Holzman

The class, designed to accommodate students at a variety of skill levels, is based on the carving of a stylized monk's head. This charming chap, whose ancestor was once a beam support in the rathskellar of the Hotel Buffalo, has graciously offered to model for us. Working from a band-sawn cutout (2 inch thick basswood blank provided), you will complete one of these caricatures. Those with advanced carving and modeling skills will be encouraged to introduce some personal variations. The finished corbel can be hung like a picture, used as a shelf or, as the instructor has done in his own post & beam home, actually be put to work as a beam supporter. A basic set of carving tools will be provided, but if you have your own set and mallet you certainly should bring them along. Sharpening equipment will also be available.

Please bring a hand mirror so you can copy some of your own facial details.
