Build an Observation Bluebird Nest Box

Bluebirds are so beautiful and interesting. Come construct an observation bluebird nest box. Bluebirds are cavity nesters and this nest box has a clear plastic panel on one side that makes it possible to check on the progress of young nestlings without disturbing the nest. You will learn some basic woodworking skills in addition to the fundamentals of nest box design and the proper placement and maintenance of your nest box. A great class for anyone interested in helping preserve our state bird while learning about the wonderful ways bluebirds enrich our lives. All are welcome to participate in this class; children ages 10 to 14 must be accompanied by an adult.

Woodworking Hand Tools-Basics

Have you ever thought about making something you’ve seen in the stores? Or do you need to fix something around the house but you don’t know how to begin and want to be safe using the tools? If yes, then this is the class for you. Woodworking and using hand tools isn’t something just for “Tim the Tool Man”, but is for anyone. With the basic knowledge you will get in this class you will be well on your way to building, creating, and working safely with a wide variety of both hand tools and portable power tools. We will take the mystery out of working with hand tools and provide you one-on-one coaching so you can learn how to go from idea to creation. The building blocks to creating in wood are universal: planning, measuring, cutting, joining, assembly, and finish. This is a great class for beginners, but is equally valuable for those wanting to take their woodworking skills and dreams to the next level.

Build a Rustic Birdhouse

Anyone can learn to make a rustic birdhouse in just a few hours. A birdhouse is a simple structure with seven basic parts: two sides, a front and back, a bottom, and two pieces for the top. Power tools are not necessary to cut the wood; it can be done with a handsaw. Using rough-cut lumber, you will construct a rustic birdhouse that can be functional and/or decorative. Choose from several birdhouse designs. There will be a short discussion about nesting birds, feeding birds, and suitable houses for area birds. Participants are encouraged to bring objects (such as old drawer pulls, door knobs, hardware, etc.) from home. Adults and teens welcome; children ages 10-14 must be accompanied by an adult.

Introduction to Coopering: Make Your Own Wooden Bucket

In this class, students will learn to make a wooden bucket using traditional hand tools and authentic techniques. Beginning with boards, you will finish with a functional bucket to take home. This is an introduction to the historic trade of coopering: the making of containers made from staves held together by hoops. No glue is used; a watertight seal is created by perfect fit of the staves and bottom. Other items made by the cooper include butter churns, washtubs and barrels. Hand tool experience is helpful, but not required. This class is for students 18 years and older.

Shaker Oval Boxes

These boxes are simply beautiful and you'll leave this class with a set you created yourself! Enjoy learning the process by which the Shakers made these simple yet elegant wooden vessels more than 150 years ago. In this class you will make a nest of five boxes from cherry wood. Using carefully prepared thin strips of wood, you will carve the “fingers” on one end before soaking them in a hot water bath. Copper tacks are applied to hold the band together and the cherry tops and bottoms are fitted and held in place by wooden pegs. This project entails simple construction and elegant design - anyone who has admired these boxes can join. No woodworking experience necessary.

Make a Sack-Back Windsor Arm Chair

In this five-day class, you will make your own Windsor Chair. You will be guided throughout the process: from splitting logs for bendings and spindles, to shaping all the parts, steam bending, and assembly. The class will also cover sharpening a drawknife, plane irons,and how to set up and use a plane. You will shape your seat from a 2" thick X 21" wide X 16" deep blank of pine or poplar (the typical choice of wood in the early Windsors). Tools you will use include the gutter adz, scorp, and round bottom planes, and of course the typical bench planes, draw knife, and spokeshaves. The angles of the legs are what separate the Windsor chair from ladder back or high style Queen Anne chairs. The use of rake and splay are explored to set the compound angles. All holes are drilled by eye with brace and spoon bits (chairmakers bits, because of their size and shape). Using bevel gauges and "winkers", you will see how easy it is to set the legs. Then we will set the top half, arm, arm posts, spindles, and bow. You can use a ruler, square or any other mechanical means of setting the arms and spindles, but the final vote is your visual check of how it looks. Wood movement may have the final say in how the chair will be put together; this is one of the reasons all chairs are slightly different from each other. Then we will explore the use of color and how it enhances the lines of the chair. Milk paint will also be provided.

Students are encouraged to bring their own tools: planes, chisels, and hammers, etc., and any specialty tools such as froe, adz, scorp, and gutter adz.

Making Hammer and Axe Handles

The Adirondacks were built with simple tools such as traditional hammers and axes. The hammerhead and axe head were the trade of the local blacksmith but they needed handles to be useful. Our early ancestors created all their tool handles themselves since there were no hardware stores - they just hiked into the woods and found their materials! So come fashion handles just like the early settlers did.

Children's Pull Sled

The class will incorporate basic woodworking, including cutting, fastening and preparing wood for finishing. By the end of the class, you will have a beautiful sled to take home or give to a loved one. The completed sled is sure to become a family heirloom. This class is suitable for beginning woodworkers as well as those with advanced skills.

Learn how to steam bend local Adirondack Red Oak into the graceful forms of this one-of-a-kind chair that is both beautiful and comfortable. Working with a variety of hand tools, you will bend and fasten the slats, laminate frame elements, join everything together, and sand, finish, and complete a beautiful chair ready for a prominent spot in your camp or home. Some prior woodworking experience is helpful, but beginners are welcome too.

Toboggan Making

What could be more fun than learning how to make your own traditional toboggan and having it ready when the snow flies - whoosh! The class will incorporate basic woodworking skills, including working with patterns, cutting, fastening, and preparing the wood for finishing. In addition, you will learn how to steam bend your runners, along with a bit of history on how native people came to use the toboggan. A great class for both beginner and experienced woodworkers alike.
