Folded Bark Basket

Barry Keegan

In this class you will make a traditional bark berry-picking basket in the same style that local native people would have created. Made mostly from a single slab of elm bark, it is scored and folded back upon itself, then pierced and decoratively laced up. You will twine your own cord from elm or basswood inner-bark strips to make a strong carrying handle. When finished, the handle goes around the back of your neck so that the basket hangs at the perfect picking height upon your chest. You will use both traditional stone tools as well as modern tools to speed along the basket-making process. Learn about bark-peeling season, as well as the secrets to locating and safely harvesting bark from trees!

Medium Pack Basket

Linda Allen

The Adirondack Pack Basket is one of the most recognized objects associated with the Adirondacks. These versatile baskets were used to carry just about everything the guides, hunters, and trappers took with them into the woods. Create your own pack basket patterned from the traditional Adirondack Pack Baskets. This is a great in-between size that works well for a man or woman. You will weave your pack with various sizes of reed, add a hardwood handle, and apply a cotton harness or custom leather harness. (The leather harness needs to be ordered a minimum of two weeks prior to class). The first day you will weave the base with pre-cut reed stakes. Then weave the sides of your pack with flat reed. The second day you will pack the weave tight, weave the false rim, cut and tuck stakes, and add the handle, rim, and skids. Learn how to fit your rim, carving your skids and rim. A harness will be applied to your completed pack.

Please bring to class a hand towel, pencil, tape measure and scissors.

Braided-rim Basket for the Tabletop or Wall

Barbara Boughton

This basket serves equally well as a tabletop display filled with mail or seasonal items, or as a wall basket, with an "ear" woven into the back for hanging. The basket is woven in the plain weave method with a solid bottom. It incorporates a "chain weave", woven with dyed round reed in a choice of colors. The basket is finished with a braided and scalloped rim, woven with matching dyed reed. A choice of a ceramic accent embellishes the basket in coordinating colors and a charming theme.

Two-by-Two Twill Basket

Barbara Boughton

Whereas a plain weave involves weaving a horizontal element over and under a vertical, twill involves weaving over and under more than one vertical element at a time. This adjustment enables a weaver to create many patterns. In this class, students will weave 2x2 twill, using hand-dyed reed in a choice of colors for the horizontal element, and natural spokes for the vertical. Weaving with two colors allows a distinctive chevron pattern to emerge up the side. This basket is woven on a twined base, and is finished with a hand-carved oak handle. Dimensions approx. 9" diameter, 7" high at rim, 12" high at handle.

Students must be 12 years or older.
