Fraktur House Blessing

Try your hand at lettering and decorating a traditional keepsake. These elaborate documents were created by German settlers to commemorate birth, marriage, a new home, the new year and other special events. The word fraktur refers to the brokenness of the Old English lettering style used in them. You will learn the history of fraktur, how to form the upper and lower case letters, and how to color a simple border using a template. You may choose from several sayings, or plan your own wording. Take home a finished 8-1/2" x 11" piece ready to frame as a family heirloom or treasured gift. Students must be 18 years or older.

Portrait from a Photograph

Beginning with a photocopy enlargement of a close-up photograph of you or a loved one, you will transfer reference points of the face onto stretched canvas. Using fast-drying acrylic paints, you will create a one color under painting. Then layer by layer, and area by area, you will build up a likeness of the colored photograph. Starting with this fool-proof foundation, you will be amazed what a fine portrait can be achieved. You will take home your painting, brushes, and a set of tubes of acrylic paints.

Pastels Plein Air

Plein Air is working directly with nature, pulling inspiration from the world around you in the field. Our instructor, Robert Selkowitz has been doing this with pastels for 35 years. When he started he used brown kraft paper and a variety of inexpensive chalks and pastels. If you are new to pastel you can start cheaply and add as you get more interested. Pastels use the same pigments as in oil paints, without the oil. They are rich and vibrant. You will use dry pastels in hard, medium and soft consistencies, mixing colors on the paper as you work, rubbing and drawing. You will love working in pastels from life in nature, inspired by a composition that you perceive as interesting and beautiful. If you would like to try your hand at pastel or deepen your experience with pastel, take this class. The instructor will demonstrate his technique of direct work and respond to your efforts on an individual basis. A materials list will include kraft paper or pastel paper, a starter set of Nupastel hard pastels and a few Rembrandt or other mid-market pastels, a backing board and clips for the paper, wet wipes and a rag, a seat or easel.

Tole Painted Spring Flowers Tray

The wooden tray is perfect as a display piece, but don't be afraid to use it, as it will be finished with a coat of polyurethane varnish. A great piece for your home, or a delightful gift. You will practice the basic strokes, transfer the design, and paint the flowers. No previous painting experience required.

Landscape in Watercolor

Watercolor has long been a medium used for landscape paintings. The Adirondack’s beautiful scenery has inspired many famous artists, including Winslow Homer. In this class you will be given an introduction (or review for those with prior experience) to the basic techniques and characteristics of the watercolor medium. The first day you will prepare backgrounds that can be painted upon in the second session. The next day you will be provided with photos of landscape elements (trees, skies, closeups of plants or bushes, etc.) to use as images to be manipulated with various watercolor techniques. You will learn to move the brush in ways that can open the senses to immediate and fresh responses to what is observed as well as felt. Weather permitting, we will use the outdoor scene by the school as our subject. Call AFS at 518-696-2400 for the list of tools and materials required for this class. Participants with supplies may bring their own. Paper will be available at cost, as needed.

Drawing for the Crafts Person

In this introductory drawing class, you will learn to “look at what you see” and “see what you are looking at”. You will be taught about the basic shapes that make up every object, as well as shading, perspective, and blind contour drawing. Learn the tricks to making pencil marks into a meaningful drawing. Particularly good for the crafts person who wants to make meaningful sketches of his/her work, this class is truly for those who think they cannot draw. Bring pencils and white drawing paper.

You'll bring out this large cookie box year after year to offer your very best baking. Although the design looks complicated, it is not difficult to do. No previous painting experience required. All materials supplied. Take home the finished box. You will bring this box out to store and serve your special holiday treats year after year.
