WILLIAMSBURG BASKET

Beverly Cornelius

This basket is not made exactly like the ones made by the Cooks for many years in Williamsburg, but it has the same basic shape.  We think you will enjoy making this wonderful basket just in time for Easter.  The “Williamsburg Basket” is a strong and handsome round market basket that will hold lots of chocolates or anything else you want to fill it with, such as Apples.  Makes a fine Easter Basket.  The finished size of this basket without the handle is about 7 ½” x 12” x 10”.   For this class we will be using a purchased handle.

Adirondack Pack Basket – Large

(Dimensions: 9” x 12” X 20”H)

Linda Allen

The Adirondack Pack Basket is one of the most recognized objects associated with the Adirondacks.  These versatile baskets were used to carry just about everything the guides, hunters and trappers took with them into the woods.  Create your own pack basket patterned from the traditional Adirondack Pack Baskets.  You will weave your pack with various sizes of reed, a hand carved oak handle and apply a cotton harness or custom leather harness.  (The leather harness needs to be ordered a minimum of two weeks prior to class.)   The first day you will weave the base with the pre-cut reed stakes. Then weave the sides of your pack with flat reed. As you weave Linda will be guiding you as you concentrate on shape, creating a belly as you work a continuous weave, completing the main weaving on your first day. As time permits you may start preparing your rim and skids for the next day.   We come back the second day to pack tight, weave the false rim, cut and tuck stakes, add the handle, the rim and skids. Linda will teach you to carve your skids and to shape your rim using a drawknife. A harness will be applied to the completed pack.   A pattern will be included with the materials. (Those who wish to stain their basket may purchase stain at an additional fee of $8.50 per can.) If time allows you may stain your basket in class time.   This class can be a challenge for a beginner, weaving experience or prior experience on a smaller pack is recommended.  If you have any questions, contact Linda prior to class.

Market Basket

Beverly Cornelius

One Basket, Two Different Handles.  The inspiration for this basket was an antique advertising handle Beverly found in a Schoharie shop.  These handles were used to make carrying brown paper and string wrapped packages (an early form of packaging of store purchases) easier to carry home and advertising for the store.  Students will be able to add their own decoration to this handle as well.  Students should have enough time in this one day class to make a second basket with a different handle.  The finished size of this basket is approximately 13” x 6” x 4” and is woven using reed.

Birch Bark Containers

Laura Ginter

The traditional Birch Bark containers and baskets were made and used in the Adirondacks well before the white man arrived.  Native American people cut Birch Bark and made containers for food storage and many other uses.  Today, these classic containers grace almost every rustic cabin from the simple one room log cabin to our Adirondack “Great Camps”.  No wonder, as they are both functional, decorative and unique.  Learn how to make these traditional Birch Bark containers by selecting the bark, cutting, sewing and much more.  A great fall one-day class for beginners and experienced basket makers alike – you won’t want to miss this fun class!

Laura Ginter
Our native people often used antlers for both decoration and handles for their everyday objects and baskets.  In this special three-day class, Laura will guide you through all the steps necessary to make an exquisite antler basket, sure to become a focal point of any décor.

This is an advanced beginner class that uses antlers (shed from deer), round reed, and sea grass.  The basket is made with an antler handle and is a ribbed style basket.  Basket shape depends upon the shape of the antler.

Adirondack Blueberry Picking & Gathering Baskets

Beverly Cornelius

This basket is a variation on an Adirondack Pack Basket. The Pack Basket is one of the oldest surviving traditions inside the Adirondack Park.  We will use a continuous weave technique and hand shaping to create this wonderfully useful basket.  Shaker Tape will be used to create a sturdy strap that will leave your hands free for blueberry picking or any other type of gathering.  It also makes a great basket to keep your yarn when knitting socks. This basket will be woven using reed and Shaker Tape.  The approximate finished size is 10 - 12″ tall (width may vary).

WOOL DRYING BASKET

Beverly Cornelius

This handsome basket is a lesson in twill weaving (over two patterns).  Perfect for holding a large knitting project or magazines, this footed basket is woven of reed with bushel basket type handles.  Historically this basket was used for drying fleece, though it would have been woven in a plain weave to allow air to circulate through the wool.  The finished size is approximately 11” x 11” x 12” without the feet and handles.  For this class we will be using purchased handles and feet.
