Nature & Outdoor Photography for Teens

Lesley Dixon

This beginner’s workshop in outdoor and nature photography for young adults will focus on basic techniques and tips to improve your outdoor photography skills.  We will start the day with a basic overview on how to use your camera, including shutter speed, aperture, depth-of-field, and what techniques to use to get the type of shot you want.  We will also talk about composition and lighting.  Since there are beautiful photographic locations nearby we will then move the workshop outside to try to capture all the beauty surrounding the folk school.  There are waterfalls, rivers, lakes and forested areas.  This workshop is suitable for both regular digital cameras and digital SLR cameras. Please do not be intimidated if you are inexperienced.  Lesley welcomes the opportunity to help you learn and improve!  Topics to be covered include composition, lighting, use of equipment, and plenty of time for questions and answers.  This class is suggested for those 14 years and older.

Our Comprehensive One Day Adirondack Photography Workshop is for beginning and intermediate photographers and features instruction on many facets of digital and film photography including – camera basics, digital camera features and menus, RAW files, (histograms), digital workflow, lenses, depth of field, composition, lighting, and various photo techniques. The 8 hour day features about 3 – 4 hours of classroom instruction, with plenty of time for Q & A. We may be doing close-up or telephoto photography, as well as photographing wide angle and panoramic landscape views. In cloudy or rainy conditions, we might work along the edge of a lake or a waterfall.

This photo workshop is rated ‘easy’. Most of the potential photography locations are within a short walking distance. There may be some ups and downs to the walking, so it is a good idea to have a pack that comfortably accommodates both camera gear and outdoor gear while walking in these conditions. There are a maximum of 10 students in the workshop to facilitate the general instruction and allow the instructor to provide individual attention. No matter which camera you use, a sturdy tripod is essential for working with composition and slow shutter speed techniques.  If you have questions or need more information, please contact the Adirondack Folk School at 518-696-2400 and we will forward your questions to Carl.

Our Image Critique One Day Adirondack Photography Workshop for advanced beginner and intermediate photographers is for those looking to spend time working on composition and image capture skills. It is recommended that you already have an understanding of how to work with the shutter speed for motion, and the aperture for depth of field – or have taken Carl’s class – Perfect Pictures Every Time – which covers basic camera principles.

During the classroom time we will briefly cover RAW files, histograms, focal lengths, and depth of field, as well as composition and lighting, but the emphasis will be on working with and critiquing each student’s images. The 8 hour day features about 2 – 3 hours of classroom instruction, with plenty of time for Q & A. This will be followed by a couple hours of photography at nearby photo locations practicing the composition techniques. We’ll return to the classroom to critique the shoot, and then if time allows we’ll head out to photograph the last light of the day.

During the afternoon and evening photo shoots there will potentially be considerable diversity in the lighting conditions. We will be working with whatever the lighting is that day to decide both when, where and the types of scenes we’ll be photographing. The composition principles will apply to all types of photography including – close-up, telephoto, wide angle and panoramic views. There are several wonderful photography locations nearby including forested locations as well open views along a lake, stream, river, cascades, and an impressive waterfall on the Hudson.
