Timber Framing

More Timber Framing Classes for 2012!

Trestle Ponies

Sam Caldwell

So what are trestle ponies?  They are fancy sawhorses used to support massive timbers when building large timber frame structures.  Build yourself a set and have solid sawhorses for projects around the house, or you could use them to create the base for a trestle dining room table.  Whatever you use them for, you will be learning the basics of timber framing.  Whether building the trestle ponies or an entire building, the knowledge and skills for cutting these beautiful mortise and tenon joints is the same.  This is a great beginner’s class where you will learn the history of timber framing as you drill, cut, and chisel.

Timber Framing Woodshed

Sam Caldwell

In this Timber Framing class you will be introduced to the basic timber framing methods and the tools that are used for building timber frame construction.  You probably already have all the tools you need in your garage at home.  Our instructor will demonstrate different methods of cutting the basic mortise and tenon joints, discuss and put together knee braces and demonstrate the different ways of using hand tools in framing and their relative efficiency.   Here you will create your own woodshed which you will build and take home.  All you need then is to add the siding and roof at home and start stacking!

Build an Adirondack Cabin

John Shafer

Timber framing is a traditional building method used historically in the Adirondacks utilizing hand tools, native materials with mortise and tenon joinery.   In this class you will create a structure with your own hands as our ancestors did.  You will learn a brief history and explanation of timber framing techniques followed by learning layout and the steps for cutting your joints.  You will learn how to properly use and maintain your tools and cut the joinery for your own 12’ x 12’ structure.  At the completion of the class, you should have made most or all of the joints.  You will learn how to pre-assemble the timbers and raise the structure once it is home.  All that is left will be for you to load your truck or trailer and take the structural components home.  So, come and create your very own 12’ x 12’ shed, camp or addition!  Students may work alone or with a partner.  Special timber framing chisels required for this class are included in the tuition.

Build a Timber Frame Play House

John Shafer

If the full size cabin timber framing project is too big for you, we’ll bet you have a “little person” or know of ones who would love to have their very own Timber Frame Play House!  It can be used for many other covers around your house as well, but in any case this is a great class allowing you the chance to learn the basics of Timber Framing.  Here you will learn layout techniques, the proper way to transfer the measurements from drawing to timbers, and experience the fun in cutting all your own mortise and tenon joints.  The end results will be a beautiful structure that will put a smiles on both “big & little faces” alike.
