2012 WORKSHOPS
Early Adirondack Quilts – History, Antique Sewing Machines & Fabric
Quilt Demonstration & Hands-On Experience with These Older Machines
Ruby Marcotte
In this workshop Ruby will share with the class her quilting knowledge as taught to her in the 40’s-50’s by her grandmother, Viola LaPier (1891-1989). Her grandmother, sewing on a treadle sewing machine and later a Singer electric, was known for her crazy “patchwork” quilts. She was part of a community on West Mountain, Corinth, about 1 mile from the south shore of the Sacandaga. Although she made these utility quilts for family members and friends, she wasn’t aware that she also had a “cottage industry”. Her quilts were sold locally and to celebrities Walter & Carol Matthau and as far away as Germany. As part of the course, students will be given insight into the types of materials used during the 1930’s and beyond. A chain stitch machine, treadle and the old faithful black Singer (hand-crank and electric) will be part of this workshop.
Have you always wanted to try sewing on a treadle machine or learn how a “chain-stitch” machine works? Maybe you wondered what it was like to sew on a hand crank sewing machine? After this workshop, you will have a better appreciation for the time saving machines of today and be given an opportunity to try using these vintage sewing machines for yourself. A “course packet” (pieces from the past: used wool, arrow shirt and feedbags and mail order catalog materials) will be made available to the class for an additional $10.00 charge.
