Wooden Step-Stool

Bart Pisha

Ever since the invention of high shelves, toilets too high for children's access and bookshelves, step-stools have been a useful part of people's lives. Participants in this course will have the opportunity to create a traditional wooden step-stool of one of several available designs out of found materials, easily worked soft wood or basswood suitable for decorative carving. Students may choose between a traditional stool made from planks or a version of the traditional stool made of basswood; both of which are great for beginners. Participants with intermediate woodworking skills and experience can choose the more challenging "rustic" stool created out of wood found in a forest. Stools made of basswood will not be assembled and wood finish will not be applied so they can be decorated in Dennis Wilson's "Chip Carving: The Next Step - Gothic Hearth Stool" course on April 6 & 7.

Seasonal Attunement - Walking the Wheel

Margo Mullein

Experience the seasons from mother nature's perspective, as we follow her journey through spring, summer, fall and winter. This course is a blend of observations, teachings and hands on experiences which can guide us to live sustainably while incorporating a practice of attuning to the season. We'll begin on our River Trail to collect natural material which will then be used to create a Medicine Wheel, based on Native principals. Walking the wheel we'll stop at each segment for an in-depth look at what it has to offer us, discussing the 4 seasons, their corresponding compass direction, animal totems, elements, body organ relationship and the life cycle / energy of plants. Working with plants at their peak, we'll harvest plants from the wild and return to the course room for the hands-on portion of our day, where each of us will make and take our own seasonally attuned herbal preparation: SPRING (4/28): Plant Infused Oils; SUMMER (7/21): Balms for Bites, Stings, Rashes; FALL: (10/27): Botanical Scrubs for Face and Body; WINTER (12/8): Breathe Deep Salve. A seasonally inspired lunch is included in each class!

Feather fans are quite significant to Native Americans and have a long history of being used in Pow Wows and in the Native American Church. Gourd Dream Catcher

Carol Maher

A Native American tradition teaches that dreams hover near the sleeper, waiting for an opportunity to enter the mind. Grandmother Nokomis spared a spider's life, and out of gratitude, the spider spun a web to trap bad dreams and allow good ones to drift through to her. Students will create a lovely gourd version of this to place by their own beds. Students will cut and clean their gourd, and choose from a wide variety of finished for the outside. Students will weave the web when the exterior of the gourd is finished.

Introduction to Coopering: Make Your Own Wooden Bucket

Tools for Chair Making: Travisher or Compass Plane

David Abeel

Choose to make a travisher or compass plane. Both are wonderful assistants for excavating, carving and shaping Windsor chair parts. The Travisher is a curved bladed spokeshave. It allows the user to hog material or to take a more nuanced shaving especially on concave surfaces. This travisher will have an adjustable blade position to adjust the mouth for deeper cuts and to remove it for sharpening. The Compass Plane is very similar to the Scrub Plane sporting a narrow blade with a curved cutting edge. The key difference: the sole of the compass plane is curved on two planes so its blade can be used very effectively to hog seat material on any concave surface. This tool is safer and easier to control than the adze when aggressive excavation begins. On class day students will work with a 01 tool steel blank, grind a bevel, bend a curve and create two horns ready for heat treating. They will then heat their blade to 1500 degrees, quench in oil, and then temper at 400 degrees to achieve a toughness and hardness of roughly R 60. Blades will then be fitted to a wooden tool body using the drill press, sander, bandsaw and a variety of chisels.

Traditional or Arts & Crafts Era Floorcloth

Janet Flinchbaugh

Create your own floorcloth in either a traditional pattern or Arts & Crafts style using environmentally-safe, water-based paints and finishes. The use of painted canvas floor coverings, also known as oil cloths, dates as far back as the 14th century in Europe. People coming to this country were looking for ways to reproduce some of the furnishings they were used to back home. Since resources were limited, worn sails from ships provided them with a base to paint and cover their floors. Over time floorcloths proved themselves to be one of the most durable forms of floor covering used. Centuries old pieces still remain intact with the pattern clearly visible. Come create your own artful and durable floorcloth that will last for generations.

Wooden Children's Toys

Bart Pisha

Historically many children, particularly in impoverished or rural areas, did not have access to commercially produced toys, either because they were not sold locally or because their families could not afford to purchase them. Nonetheless, these children often did have wonderful toys to play with because someone in their family or immediate social circle was able to make toys for them. Participants in this course will have the opportunity to create one or two (depending on the complexity) children's toys from wood and finish with a safe food-grade preservative. The instructor will provide several different templates to make animal or vehicle designs. Students can also bring their own ideas for designs.
