Introduction to Cold Process Soap Making

This class is an introduction to the cold process method of soap making. Students will get a lesson in lye safety and will participate in the making of the soap. Students will leave with a loaf of soap that will yield about eight bars. Finally, while this is an introductory class, there will be discussion about ways to acquire further knowledge/skills.

Traditional Soap Making

Just talk to one of the many folks who have taken Chrissey’s soap making class and you will find out why this is one of the most popular classes we offer. It’s a wonderful way to spend a Sunday afternoon, creating soap just like Grandma used, but better! Learn how to make soap that not only smells good but is all-natural and feels great on your skin. This fun class will teach you how to create soap using the cold-process and natural ingredients. You will learn all about the basic process, oils, herbs and fragrances. You will create soap from a recipe, while learning how to handle lye safely. Finally, you'll take home your hand-made soap. So say good-bye to store-bought soap and start using soap you made yourself! Make sure to wear old clothes and bring an apron.

Gourd Design: Bird Feeders

This course teaches participants how to make a natural Gourd Bird Feeder. During the introduction, numerous examples of raw and finished gourds will be shown. The first part of the class will be devoted to preparation and planning, and the cleaning and preparation of both interior and exterior surface of the gourd will be covered in detail. Various tools and materials will be used, including scouring pads, steel wool, power drills and saws, Dremel tools, scrapers, sanding materials and more. Students will cut out and sand down one to four large openings in the upper half of their gourd. After a rigorous interior scraping preparation of the gourd, numerous painting and drawing techniques will be discussed and demonstrated, including wet and dry brush, sponge, stencil and others. After the base is dry, students will decorate their own gourds. Once complete, the gourds will be coated with polyurethane and made ready to hang.

Seasonal Attunement - Walking the Wheel

Experience the seasons in a deeper way as we follow nature's journey through spring, summer, fall and winter. Using the sustainable blueprint of the Native American Medicine Wheel as our guide, we will create a Medicine Wheel from natural objects. Then walking the wheel, we'll stop at each segment for an in-depth look at: purpose of season, relationship of direction to season, animal totems, the elements, season to body organ relationship, and the life cycle and energy of plants. Then we'll return to the course room for the hands-on portion of our class where each of us will create our own seasonally attuned herbal preparation: Spring - Plant Infused Oils, Vinegars & Butters; Summer - Best Dressed Salads & You; Fall - Botanical Scrubs for Face and Body; Winter - Breathe Deep Salve. A seasonally inspired lunch is included with your materials fee!

Soap Cupcakes

Take your soap making skills to the next level! In this class, Roberta will guide you through the process of formulating the proper recipe for soap "cupcakes" and soap "frosting". We will then practice making the cupcakes and piping the frosting. These adorable soap cupcakes are a delight to use and make amazing favors or gifts.

Radiant Life with Herbs

We shouldn't have to wait to get sick before we do something for ourselves. In this class we will go over some of the common things that go on in our lives that can detract from a full vibrant life. We will use herbs to make things like Snore No More Steam and Bionic Bone vinegar. We'll also learn how to use herbs to banish hot flashes and those constant nightly trips to the bathroom and more.

A chart will be provided which shows the sizes of holes for different local birds. Two small holes will be drilled at the top for hanging purposes. Introduction to Beading

This class will focus on single strand beading techniques for a necklace, bracelet or ankle bracelet. Students will learn about the various types of wire, metal findings, glass, crystal and gemstone beads. Students will be able to incorporate local gems and minerals, including garnet, Herkimer diamonds and quartz. Sue will also address proper care and storage of beaded items made in this class.

Have cabin fever? Does a spa day sound inviting? We are coming to realize more and more that we are a whole being: mind, body and spirit. So if we take our physical balance and emotional harmony seriously we are on our way to fundamental good health, which in turn is the foundation of beauty. In today's world it isn't a luxury to take time out each day in order to reconnect to your inner self, it is a necessity! The purpose of this class is to take a few minutes to unwind, be mindful and relax. Plan on having a foot bath while applying a facial mask which you will make. As the day progresses, we will make a variety of products that can be incorporated into your life. You will find they are easy to make, affordable and fun!
