Medium Adirondack Pack Basket

Linda Scherz

The Adirondack Pack Basket is one of the most recognized objects associated with the Adirondacks. These versatile baskets were used to carry just about everything the guides, hunters, and trappers took with them into the woods. Create your own pack basket patterned from the traditional Adirondack Pack Baskets. The medium pack is a great size for teen or adult men and women. The first day students will weave a plain weave base with the pre-cut spokes and then weave the sides. Linda will be guiding students as they concentrate on shape and creating the belly while learning to continuous weave. The main weaving will be done on the first day. The baskets will sit and dry overnight. On the second day, students will pack the baskets tight, level the top, weave a false rim, cut and tuck spokes, insert a hardwood handle and complete the rim and skids. Lastly, students will add an adjustable cotton or leather harness for carrying. Linda will provide students with guidance and provide many tips and techniques as well as all materials and tools students will need during class. Students will be using a drawknife and other sharp tools. Baskets will not be stained during class. Approximate dimensions are 8 1/2" x 11" x 16 "height.

Fishing Creel

Barbara Boughton

Weaving with reed, students will recreate this antique lidded fishing creel. The basket has an open-work bottom, and the classic drop-in hole in the lid. Students will gain knowledge and experience in hand-shaping techniques, resulting in the classic creel shape. The woven lid is tied on with leather straps on the back, and a carrying strap may be incorporated, if desired. The size of the creel is traditionally a reminder to take only as much as is needed for the day. This creel measures 12" long, 8" wide, 6" high.

A fun and colorful basket, the Trifecta is a new class being offered for the first time this year by our master basketry instructor, Linda Scherz. Students start with a 3" wood base with pre-glued spokes, then will triple twine with three colors of cotton cord in a spiral pattern. The next step will be to braid weave with soft suede leather and then triple twine in a stacking pattern with cotton cord. The rim is accentuated with braided cotton cord and lashed with a twist on a traditional lashing. The final dimensions of the basket are 3" base, 5" top with a depth of 2 3/4". The instructor will bring all materials to make the basket and tools students will need during class. Students should wear comfortable clothing.

This is a great class for a first-time weaver, as well as for those who would like to learn some new weave patterns to create a unique piece. Techniques discussed will include arrow weave, four-rod wale, as well as using color to create pattern. Students will begin by weaving a double-bottomed twined base. As they weave up the sides with the stop-start method, students may then choose to incorporate a variety of color and pattern which interests them. The basket is finished with a pair of leather handles. With a double-bottomed base, this is a very sturdy and functional basket, as well as uniquely yours. Dimensions approx. 10"diameter, 8"high.

Herb-Drying Tray

Barbara Boughton

This basket uses a Shaker Cathead technique to create "feet" at the corners of the basket, which raises the base off the surface. With an open work base, the basket allows air to circulate under and within the basket, creating a perfect place to dry herbs from the garden. The rounded-rectangular shape with bushel-style handles, and raised base, also creates a lovely place for storing and displaying year-round. The basket measures approx. 15" long, 10" wide, 6" high.

Mountain Gathering Basket

Barbara Boughton

This basket is based on a forerunner of the Nantucket Lightship basket, c. 1850. Woven on a round oak base, the spokes are inserted into a groove, which holds them firmly in place. This basket employs a continuous chase weave to build the sides, using two weavers at once. The basket is hand-shaped, not woven on a mold, and students will be challenged and excited to watch their creations grow with two weavers. A hand-carved oak handle is incorporated into the rim, which finishes this rustically graceful and functional basket. It is woven on a 6" oak base which grows into a 12" diameter basket. Dimensions are approx. 10" high at sides, 16" high at handle.

Adirondack Berry Picking and Gathering Basket

Beverly Cornelius

This basket is a variation on an Adirondack Pack Basket, one of the oldest surviving traditions inside the Adirondack Park. You will use a continuous weave technique and hand shaping to create this wonderfully useful basket. Shaker tape will be used to create a sturdy strap that will leave your hands free for blueberry picking or any other type of gathering. It also makes a great container to keep your yarn when knitting socks. This basket will be woven using reed and Shaker tape. The approximate finished size is 10 - 12" tall (width may vary).

Braided-rim Basket for the Tabletop or Wall

Barbara Boughton

This basket serves equally well as a tabletop display filled with seasonal items, or as a wall basket, with an "ear" woven into the back for hanging. The basket is woven in the plain weave method with a solid bottom. Several methods of filling a solid bottom will be discussed. The body of the basket incorporates a "chain weave", woven with dyed round reed in a choice of colors. The basket is finished with a braided and scalloped rim, woven with matching dyed reed. A choice of a ceramic accent embellishes the basket in coordinating colors and a charming theme.

Wine Basket for Two Bottles

Barbara Boughton

This basket begins by weaving a solid bottom onto a red-oak handle, creating a very sturdy base for carrying two bottles. While weaving up the sides, a separate weaver is introduced on the inside of the basket, creating two compartments, keeping bottles from bumping. Students have the option of embellishing the top of the basket with a variety of decorative weaving techniques and strips of hand-dyed weavers. The basket is 5" wide, 8" high at the sides, and 14" high at the handle. This is a great basket for holiday entertaining or gift-giving!
