Blacksmithing

Basic Blacksmithing - Level Two

Dick Sargent

This course is a continuation of Basic Blacksmithing - Level One. We will expand on what has been learned and proceed to more advanced tool making and welding, job layout procedures, proper hinge eye forging, simple mortise and tenon construction along with other techniques as time allows. Finished projects (other than tools) will not be the point of this class. Rather, small parts and pieces of what could be elements of completed works will be yours to study, reference and refresh for yourself when you are working at home in your shop. This course is open to all beginners as long as you feel competent with the skills listed in Level One. Please don't forget your notebook and pencil. The notes on layout will be as important as any of the forged elements you will make.

Introduction to Bladesmithing

Matthew Parkinson

Taught by renowned instructor and the very first winner of Discovery Channel's Forged in Fire, Matthew Parkinson. Students can expect to forge and finish one 4-6" blade antler handled hunting knife, using a gas forge. Topics covered will be working with high carbon steels, knife design, forging a blade to shape, grinding, finishing, heat treating, fitting a guard and attaching a handle. This class is intended as an introductory bladesmithing class but some forging experience is helpful. Also covered will be the design, construction and finishing of a leather belt sheath. Students will learn how to make a pattern for the individual knife. Then they will cut out, mold, stitch, dye and finish a leather sheath. Special attention will be given to the design of the sheath for good retention of the knife as well as holding up over time.

Introduction to Blacksmithing

Garry Kalajian

This workshop is for beginners, but is well suited for those with some experience who wish to improve their skills or get help with a project. All the basics of traditional coal-forge blacksmithing will be covered: lighting and managing a forge fire, basic operations (including forge welding), and metallurgy and its application to tool making. Suggested projects include a gate hook, a trivet, and a chisel, but participants are encouraged to pursue their interest in their own projects.
