Forging Box Joint Tools

Peter Ross

This class will focus on learning to make the infamous Box Joint. This is a challenging forging exercise and we will all spend time practicing the shapes and processes before making and assembling a pair of flat jaw pliers. Students who finish ahead of schedule may elect to make other box joint tools as well, such as sugar nippers, round nose pliers, scrolling pliers, rushlights, etc. Of course, there are tools to make for this project and class time will be devoted to preparing those as well. All students will make their own set of special fullers, slitting chisel, drifts and bottom swages, enabling them to make more of these tools at will. Lastly, the work goes best with the help of a striker, so each student will have the opportunity to act as master and as striker, leading to a much better feel for that kind of teamwork. As stated this is a challenging forging project. It requires drastic re-shaping of 1/2 x 1 material while maintaining good control of size and shape. We will mainly use hand tools, with some help from a striker. For those who are interested, time can be spent filing/finishing and decorating the surfaces.

Intermediate Blacksmithing - Forging Transitions and "Set-Ups" for Various Shapes

Bob Valentine

For millennia blacksmiths have forged iron into many useful items. Integral to their shape is the transition from one cross section to another; often in a way that is both graceful and structural. This class will explore traditional 18th century forging with an emphasis on the transitions necessary in order to have structurally sound work. In addition, we will explore the various ways a shape can be forged out and the "set-up" necessary to forge shapes. Students can choose from a variety of items to make, challenging both intermediate and advanced smiths. Examples of multiple items, from hardware to hearth equipment will be available for students to examine and handle.

Hammer Making and the Striker

Patrick Quinn

In this class you will run through all the steps involved in making a 2.5 lb forging/rounding hammer. Starting with a chunk of 1045, you will punch and drift the hole, forge the cheeks, and fuller around the face and peen. Most of the work will be done with strikers and sledge hammers. We will focus on proper striking technique. After the hammer is forged, all heat-treating steps will be covered: hardening and tempering, then finishing (sanding and polishing), and, if time allows, handle making. This class is for intermediate smiths.

Introduction to Bladesmithing

Matthew Parkinson

This class is taught by renowned instructor and the very first winner of History Channel's Forged in Fire, Matthew Parkinson. Students can expect to forge and finish one 4-6" blade antler handled hunting knife, using a gas forge. Topics covered will be working with high carbon steels, knife design, forging a blade to shape, grinding, finishing, heat treating, fitting a guard and attaching a handle. This class is intended as an introductory bladesmithing class but some forging experience is helpful. Also covered will be the design, construction and finishing of a leather belt sheath. Students will learn how to make a pattern for the individual knife. Then they will cut out, mold, stitch, dye and finish a leather sheath. Special attention will be given to the design of the sheath for good retention of the knife as well as holding up over time.

The Next Step - Introduction to Blacksmithing II

Dick Sargent

If you have taken any of the four- or five-day basic blacksmithing classes, this is what should be next for you. We will expand on what you have learned and proceed to more advanced tool making and welding, job layout procedures, proper hinge eye forging, simple mortise and tenon construction along with other techniques as time allows. Finished projects (other than tools) will not be the point of this class. Rather, small parts and pieces of what could be elements of completed works will be yours to study, reference and refresh for yourself when you are working at home in your shop. This course is open to all beginners as long as you feel competent with the skills offered in our basic classes. Please don't forget your notebook and pencil. The notes on layout will be as important as any of the forged elements.

Forging Damascus

Matthew Parkinson

This class will cover the basic process of forging pattern welded Damascus steel. Students will weld up several small billets and explore the basics of pattern development. Students will also explore several common methods of forge welding as well as covering the science of forge welding. Students can expect to learn the process of choosing steels that will give good pattern and function well together in the final billet. The class will cover how to lay out and prepare the steel for forge welding both in the starting stack and in subsequent re-stacks. Special attention will be given to hand work and the making of patterns well suited to limited machinery. The main areas of pattern development will be explored as well as touching on some more advanced patterning techniques. Once the billets are forged and patterned, the class will grind and polish a window or sample tile to etch and reveal the pattern. The class will cover several techniques to etch the sample for higher contrast. The techniques taught in this class should offer students the building blocks to begin an exploration of Damascus patterns on their own. The photographs shown are examples of Damascus patterns.
