Iroquois Games and Dancing

David Cornelius

Come enjoy activities based on Native American culture and traditions. The life of our Native Americans included a great deal of communal time. Much of this time was spent playing games and dancing. In this class students will have a chance to learn and play several of these games. Some are familiar like Lacrosse and others such as Double Ball are less known. Dancing was enjoyed by all members of the family from toddlers to elders. Some dances were just for women and some just for men, while others were for everyone. Students will learn some of the basics of all three. Learn about the relationship between Native Americans and nature while dancing and playing.

Turkish Style Paper Marbling

John C. Bielik

Come learn a truly historical craft from renowned instructor and historic trades interpreter, John C. Bielik, whose paper and products are featured in the shops at Colonial Williamsburg. This workshop is intended to be an introduction to the Turkish style of paper marbling. This variety of marbling is different from most marbling done in the world today. Historically appropriate materials and techniques of the paper marbler will be the foundation of this class. While students will learn several Turkish inspired patterns, the term "Turkish" applies mainly to the materials used in the Turkish style of paper marbling. Instruction will include a discussion and application of basic tools, materials and techniques. There will be plenty of time to create a variety of patterns. It is important to wear clothing and shoes that can become stained with paint. Children ages 8-13 are welcome to take the class accompanied by a parent. Children over the age of thirteen are welcome on their own.

Make a Native American Medicine Pouch

David Cornelius

A Native American medicine pouch is a container for items believed to protect or give spiritual powers to its owner. The medicine bag is considered a very precious possession which represents a person's spiritual life and its contents are generally considered holy by the tribal community. The bags might be very plain or richly decorated and are meant to give guidance, good luck, good health, protection, abundance and even love to the individuals who carry them. Students will cut leather and shape their pouch as desired, then stitch with imitation sinew. A rawhide cord will be used to hang the pouch and can be attached using one of two different methods. It can then be decorated with beads, antler or feathers. Children who are 12 years of age and older are welcome.
