Perfect Pictures Every Time

Carl Heilman II

Understanding photography basics is the key to taking control of your camera, and knowing you got the shot when you were taking it. If you would like to take your skill level from shooting in Auto to having full control over your camera, this intensive class is for you! A step by step PowerPoint presentation helps teach the basic principles of photography including: camera options and set-up, peripheral equipment, image exposure and histograms, and will touch on shooting for HDR, and working with motion, depth of field, and composition. The class is paced to allow time for questions and interaction, with about half of the day in the classroom experimenting with the cameras, and the other half spent in the field, practicing camera techniques and shooting options. A comprehensive handout will include all the major points covered in the presentation. While the class instruction is mostly landscape based, these techniques and principles can be applied to all photographic situations.

Photoshop for Photography

Greta Heilman

Jumpstart your Photoshop knowledge with this intensive Photoshop for Photographers workshop. After a brief introduction, Greta will start by going through the various tools in Photoshop that are specific to working with photographs. She will be projecting onto a screen as students work along on the same images on their laptops. Next, she will introduce an efficient and comprehensive, easy-to-use 'system' of adjustment layers and masks that work with a series of logical steps to produce a vibrant print from a digital file. After a lunch break, students will work on 1-2 images of their own, applying the techniques introduced in the morning. Once a person becomes comfortable with this layer 'system', it may be possible to color correct some photos in as little as 20 to 30 minutes. While fine tuning more complicated images can take hours and use various advanced color management techniques, this system helps to ease whatever corrections need to be done initially and allows for any future changes to be made quickly without affecting the original master digital file.

  • Location: AFS, 51 Main Street, Lake Luzerne, NY
  • Tuition:
         Members: $105
         Non-members: $125
  • Course Length: 1 Day

Students will need to bring a laptop with Adobe Photoshop installed on it, as well as Adobe Bridge. The Adobe Creative Cloud version is best, but CS5 or CS6 also work. Students also need at least 5 potential images for consideration for working on in the afternoon. RAW files are preferable, but JPEGs can be used if necessary.
