Wooden Children's Toys

Bart Pisha

Historically many children, particularly in impoverished or rural areas, did not have access to commercially produced toys, either because they were not sold locally or because their families could not afford to purchase them. Nonetheless, these children often did have wonderful toys to play with because someone in their family or immediate social circle was able to make toys for them. Participants in this course will have the opportunity to create one or two (depending on the complexity) children's toys from wood and finish with a safe food-grade preservative. The instructor will provide several different templates to make animal or vehicle designs. Students can also bring their own ideas for designs.

Chip Carved Ornaments

Dennis Wilson

Using traditional chip carving with small knives, students will carve attractive, intricate patterns into 4" basswood disks that can be used as either Christmas tree ornaments or coasters. All students will receive and carve a basswood board with practice designs and then use the same designs to carve into the ornaments or coasters. Decorate your own tree, or give as a holiday gift! This class is as much for the beginner as it is for the advanced chip carver.
