Harp Making

Larry Benjamin

Come build a Paraguan harp. This harp is characterized by a large soundbox with a rounded base, very light weight, closely-spaced light tension strings (usually nylon), a relatively flat harmonic curve, and with the strings running up through the center of the neck, which are tuned with gear-style tuners (like a guitar). Almost all harps of this style are played with the fingernails, in very rhythmically intricate music. This is the national instrument of Paraguay, and is commonly found throughout South America, Central America and in parts of Mexico. Students will be using tools from the past and today, to fashion an instrument that will last a lifetime. After this class you may even want to learn to play your beautiful new harp!

Create Your Own Hardwood Cutting Board

Frank Lagace

Come create a beautiful 12-18" hardwood cutting board during two, half-day sessions. The class will discuss the types of wood being used, such as sappala, purple heart, African cherry and hard maple. The wood will be cut to size on a table saw. Then, using a joiner, students will make sure all pieces are the same size before gluing the various pieces together and allowing them to dry overnight. On the second day, the class will use planers to ensure that all boards are level and the same thickness. Students will then use a router to create a well and handles. Finally, the boards will be sanded.

Build a Rustic Birdhouse

Don Polunci

Anyone can learn to make a rustic birdhouse in just a few hours. A birdhouse is a simple structure with seven basic parts: two sides, a front and back, a bottom, and two pieces for the top. Power tools are not necessary to cut the wood; it can be done with a handsaw. Using rough-cut lumber, you will construct a rustic birdhouse that can be functional and/or decorative. Choose from several birdhouse designs. There will be a short discussion about nesting birds, feeding birds, and suitable houses for area birds. Participants are encouraged to bring objects (such as old drawer pulls, door knobs, hardware, etc.) from home. Adults and teens welcome; children ages 10-14 must be accompanied by an adult.

In this class students will learn the basics of the safe operation of a scroll saw, proper blade selection and installation, pattern transfer, proper cutting techniques and proper body positioning at the saw table. Each student will progress from learning to make moderate curves to tight curves using the scroll saw by producing, first, a wood maple leaf and progressing through more difficult patterns to a final puzzle which will require attention to detail and care in cutting. Come learn the secret tricks to ensure your puzzle is a success. It can make the perfect gift, too.

Introduction to Coopering: Make Your Own Wooden Bucket

David Salvetti

In this class, students will learn to make a wooden bucket using traditional hand tools and authentic techniques. Beginning with boards, you will finish with a functional bucket to take home. This is an introduction to the historic trade of coopering: the making of containers from staves held together by hoops. No glue is used; a watertight seal is created by the perfect fit of the staves and bottom. Other items made by the cooper include butter churns, washtubs and barrels. Hand tool experience is helpful, but not required. This class is for students 18 years and older.

Shaker Oval Boxes (Basic)

Eric Pintar

These boxes are simply beautiful and you'll leave this class with a set you created yourself! Enjoy learning the process by which the Shakers made these simple yet elegant wooden vessels more than 150 years ago. In this class you will make a nest of five boxes from cherry wood. Using carefully prepared thin strips of wood, you will carve the “fingers” on one end before soaking them in a hot water bath. Copper tacks are applied to hold the band together and the cherry tops and bottoms are fitted and held in place by wooden pegs. This project entails simple construction and elegant design - anyone who has admired these boxes can join. No woodworking experience necessary.

Tools for Chair Making: Travisher or Compass Plane

David Abeel

Choose to make a travisher or compass plane. Both are wonderful assistants for excavating, carving and shaping Windsor chair parts. The Travisher is a curved bladed spokeshave. It allows the user to hog material or to take a more nuanced shaving especially on concave surfaces. This travisher will have an adjustable blade position to adjust the mouth for deeper cuts and to remove it for sharpening. The Compass Plane is very similar to the Scrub Plane sporting a narrow blade with a curved cutting edge. The key difference: the sole of the compass plane is curved on two planes so its blade can be used very effectively to hog seat material on any concave surface. This tool is safer and easier to control than the adze when aggressive excavation begins. On class day students will work with a 01 tool steel blank, grind a bevel, bend a curve and create two horns ready for heat treating. They will then heat their blade to 1500 degrees, quench in oil, and then temper at 400 degrees to achieve a toughness and hardness of roughly R 60. Blades will then be fitted to a wooden tool body using the drill press, sander, bandsaw and a variety of chisels.
