It will last for many, many years and in building it you will learn many valuable skills, like how to cut angles and edges and using hand tools from a past era. No woodworking experience is required. Introduction to Coopering: Make Your Own Wooden Bucket

David Salvetti

In this class, students will learn to make a wooden bucket using traditional hand tools and authentic techniques. Beginning with boards, you will finish with a functional bucket to take home. This is an introduction to the historic trade of coopering: the making of containers made from staves held together by hoops. No glue is used; a watertight seal is created by the perfect fit of the staves and bottom. Other items made by the cooper include butter churns, washtubs and barrels. Hand tool experience is helpful, but not required. This class is for students 18 years and older.

Shaker Oval Boxes (Basic)

Eric Pintar

These boxes are simply beautiful and you'll leave this class with a set you created yourself! Enjoy learning the process by which the Shakers made these simple yet elegant wooden vessels more than 150 years ago. In this class you will make a nest of five boxes from cherry wood. Using carefully prepared thin strips of wood, you will carve the “fingers” on one end before soaking them in a hot water bath. Copper tacks are applied to hold the band together and the cherry tops and bottoms are fitted and held in place by wooden pegs. This project entails simple construction and elegant design - anyone who has admired these boxes can join. No woodworking experience necessary.

Scroll Saw Ornamental Trivets

Walt Ulrich

This class is designed for both the beginning and experienced scroll saw user with patterns of increasing difficulty to be used during the day. The first pattern to be completed by the student will have all exterior cuts of varying tightness of curvature. The second pattern will have both interior and exterior cuts requiring the student to become accustomed to frequently resetting the scroll saw blade. The final pattern will require the student to make numerous intricate interior cuts to complete. The patterns shown in the photo are only representative of possible trivet patterns to be used. Windsor Fine Furniture: Tall Stool, Comb Back Side Chair or Back Door Boot Bench

David Abeel

Making a Windsor chair, bench or stool might seem a very complicated project, but broken into many smaller steps, can be surprisingly doable. This course is designed for students from beginning to advanced skill levels ready to work with a variety of hand tools to make a family heirloom. Projects will be well-engineered, very comfortable and styled to fit any decor. Pine, poplar, oak and maple will be used for parts. Class will start with this idea: "Today you will be working on the perfect chair! For fleeting moments you will be caught in a timeless place where only the joy of being creative and working with your hands consumes all thought. The rest of the world will fade away. And the more you keep working, the more you will visit this place and come to love its walls." On Day #1, students will explore sighting lines and drilling angles, shape, boil and bend a comb, fit stretcher and legs and start excavating their seat. Students will shape parts using travishers, compass plane, draw knife and hoop shave. On Day #2, students will finish excavating their seat, shape spindles, mark and drill the comb and prepare wedges for final assembly. By the end of class all will be assembled, leveled, glued up and ready for paint or clear finish. All turned parts, tools and other raw materials will be supplied by the instructor. Greenwood Day

Jacques Gallant

In the days before sawmills, logs were turned into lumber by riving. This means splitting wood along the grain using hammers and wedges. Wood processed in this way is called cleft stock and is considered the superior material for any application that requires extreme strength because it gives material that follows perfectly the grain of the wood. It is also a pleasure to carve and plane. We will spend a day reducing an ash log into useful pieces of wood and roughing out blanks for students' future projects. Some excellent uses of the wood are axe and hammer handles, chair parts (spindles, back and legs), wooden spoons, canoe gunwales or possibly even a small bow.

Create Your Own Hardwood Cutting Board

Frank Lagace

Come create a beautiful 12-18" hardwood cutting board during two, four-hour sessions. The class will discuss the types of wood being used, such as sappala, purple heart, African cherry and hard maple. The wood will be cut to size on a table saw. Then, using a jointer, students will make sure all pieces are the same size before gluing the various pieces together and allowing them to dry overnight. On the second day, the class will use planers to insure that all boards are level and the same thickness. Students will then use a router to create a well and handles. Finally, the boards will be sanded.
