Build the Westport Chair

Larry Benjamin

We all ponder which came first...the chicken or the egg. But have you ever wondered which came first...the Adirondack chair or the Westport chair? Learn the answer to this and the history of friendship and perhaps betrayal, all while building your own Westport chair. Your chair will be a family heirloom. It will last for many, many years and in building it you will learn many valuable skills, like how to cut angles and edges and using hand tools from a past era. No woodworking experience is required. Come join the fun and learn something new.

Introduction to Wheelwrighting

David Salvetti

In this introductory class, students will spend two days making a wooden wheelbarrow wheel 16" in diameter. This is a simple style of wooden wheel, so no experience is necessary, just careful attention to detail. Using red oak and binding the hub and wheel rim with metal bands, this project is primarily woodwork with a smaller amount of metalwork. Conventional wheel making theory and practice will be examined in detail. The wheel each student will make is not dished, but the process we will follow will closely resemble most steps practiced in the making of larger wooden wheels. The frame for a wheelbarrow body to match this wheel is shown as well. This can be constructed by the student on his own, after the class is completed. Additional information regarding this will be provided on the days of the class.

Carved Stool

David Salvetti

In this class, students will learn the skills involved in making a cherry stool, which range from learning how to shape the seat to fitting the legs and crosspieces. This project is a blend of precision woodworking and working by eye, but by breaking each operation down into simple steps and using jigs, the work becomes easy. Fastening the legs in place with wedges of a contrasting wood is a hallmark of good craftsmanship and results in a strong joint. This class is an introduction to simple carving and shaping, as well as skills that can be used in many types of chair making. You will take home a finished product to be proud of.
