Basketry

Saratoga Tote II

Beverly Cornelius

This is the second in a series of Reed and Leather baskets designed by Beverly. Students will weave a variation on a Shaker Solid Bottom base to make this large Tote basket. Students will learn to rivet leather to create the straps, use leather to weave the diamond pattern and leather for the rim to keep the basket flexible. A concho will be added for a closure. This basket is made to fit perfectly over the shoulder. Approximate finished size: 13" tall without strap by 13-20" wide.

Mountaineer Adirondack Pack Basket

Linda Scherz

The Adirondack Pack Basket is one of the most recognized objects associated with the Adirondacks. These versatile baskets were used to carry just about everything the guides, hunters and trappers took with them into the woods. Create your own pack basket patterned from the traditional Adirondack Pack Baskets. The Mountaineer pack is a large pack, a great size for an adult man or woman. The first day students will weave a plain weave base with the pre-cut spokes and then weave the sides. Linda will be guiding students as they concentrate on shape and creating a belly while learning to continuous weave. The main weaving will be done the first day. The baskets will sit and dry overnight. On the second day, students will pack baskets tight, level the top, weave a false rim, cut and tuck spokes, insert a hand carved hardwood handle, fit the rim to the basket and lash the rim. Lastly, add an adjustable cotton or leather harness for carrying. Baskets will not be stained during class. Linda will teach you many tips and techniques and will bring all materials and tools students will need during class. Students will be using a drawknife and other sharp tools. Basket dimensions are 9" x 12" X 20" height.

Adirondack Berry Picking and Gathering Basket

Beverly Cornelius

This basket is a variation on an Adirondack Pack Basket, one of the oldest surviving traditions inside the Adirondack Park. You will use a continuous weave technique and hand shaping to create this wonderfully useful basket. Shaker tape will be used to create a sturdy strap that will leave your hands free for blueberry picking or any other type of gathering. It also makes a great container to keep your yarn when knitting socks. This basket will be woven using reed and Shaker tape. The approximate finished size is 10 - 12" tall (width may vary). This is a challenging class with lots of hand shaping.

Mountain Gathering Basket

Barbara Boughton

This basket is based on a forerunner of the Nantucket Lightship basket, c. 1850. Woven on a round oak base, the spokes are inserted into a groove, which holds them firmly in place. This basket employs a continuous chase weave to build the sides, using two weavers at once. The basket is hand-shaped, not woven on a mold, and students will be challenged and excited to watch their creations grow with two weavers. A hand-carved oak handle is incorporated into the rim, which finishes this rustically graceful and functional basket. It is woven on a 6" oak base which grows into a 12" diameter basket. Dimensions are approx. 10" high at sides, 16" high at handle.

Wine Basket for Two Bottles

Barbara Boughton

This basket begins by weaving a solid bottom onto a red-oak handle, creating a very sturdy base for carrying two bottles. While weaving up the sides, a separate weaver is introduced on the inside of the basket, creating two compartments, keeping bottles from bumping. Students have the option of embellishing the top of the basket with a variety of decorative weaving techniques and strips of hand-dyed weavers. The basket is 5" wide, 8" high at the sides, and 14" high at the handle. This is a great basket for holiday entertaining or gift-giving!

Pottle Basket

Beverly Cornelius

Take a step back in time and learn how to make Beverly's interpretation of a very early market basket. We are all familiar with deposit bottles, well the Pottle was a deposit basket. When shoppers came to market to purchase a quart of strawberries, they were charged an extra penny for the basket. This conical basket is made to be carried by its handle or even several over the wrist, and it's the perfect stress-free beginner project with sweet results. (Strawberries not included!) Approximate size 10-12” tall plus handle, 4-5” wide at top.

Two Irish Willow Baskets

Bonnie Gale

In this workshop, students will explore the traditions of Irish willow baskets. The unique history and techniques of Irish willow basketry will first be discussed in class. Two baskets will be made in this class: the Sciob and the Sciathog. They are both traditionally used for straining boiled potatoes. The two baskets offer a contrast of basket technique: the Sciob is a stake-and-strand willow basket while the Sciathog is a frame basket. The Sciob Irish basket starts with the making of a large round base with a most unusual weave in the middle of the base to allow for the straining of boiled potatoes. A ring of unpeeled willow is included in the weaving. The stakes are then inserted into the base and turned up. The short siding is in three rod waling weave. A rod border completes this sturdy basket. The basket is 15 inches in diameter and is approximately 5 inches tall. The Sciathog basket starts with a prepared and dried hoop given to each student. Students will place the first set of ribs using God's Eye weaving. Randing weave continues from each side as the other sets of ribs are progressively inserted. A range of naturally processed and colored willows allow students to experiment with design variations. The Sciathog is 13 inches in diameter and 3 inches tall.

Shaker Cat Head Basket

Barbara Boughton

The Shaker Community, founded in New York, is known for their design aesthetic, combining form and function in simply elegant ways. This class introduces students to the Cathead base, a Shaker classic. In this form, a small, square base grows into a round basket, at the diameter and height of the student's choosing. This particular technique of weaving corners produces four "feet" upon which the basket rests. This creates a raised base on the inside of the basket, allowing its contents to first fill the perimeter of the basket, and then the center. Disbursing the weight of the basket contents, first to the perimeter, serves to prevent produce from becoming bruised and protects the center of the basket from wearing out. Students will weave a two-by-two twill pattern for both the base and the sides of the basket.

The Beekman Pie Carrier Basket

Beverly Cornelius

This basket was designed exclusively for the Beekman Mercantile in Sharon Springs, NY. It features a large 12" x 7" solid bottom Shaker Cathead that, when inverted, forms the cover for this pie carrier. The base is a 13" breadboard that will be provided. The instructor designed the component parts of the carrier to be used on a daily basis. The basket is for bread and fruit and the bread board is for cutting and/or serving. You need only store the handle (provided) and strap until ready to use as a pie or cake carrier. Students will weave the solid bottom base using a Shaker technique. The basket will then be pinned to a mold (provided) for weaving using a chase weave technique. Students will also learn to rivet leather to assemble the straps. The handle assembly will be provided. The finished size of the basket is 13" x 8" (without handle).

Pair of Williamsburg Baskets

Barbara Boughton

The Williamsburg basket is named for the shape of the handle which allows a square base to flare at the sides, becoming round at the rim. The Williamsburg is a lovely traditional shape and may be woven in a number of sizes. Here, students will weave 2 baskets, on a 5" handle and a 7" handle. Students will learn basic basketry skills, beginning with weaving the base for the 5" basket. Natural and hand-dyed weavers will be used to create color pattern. Having completed the 5" basket in class, students will weave the 7" handle in the afternoon. Both baskets include a hand-painted stoneware disc in a variety of colors and themes. Students leave with 2 beautiful pieces.

Holiday Braided Rim Basket

Barbara Boughton

This basket serves equally well as a tabletop display filled with seasonal items, or as a wall basket, with an "ear" woven into the back for hanging. The basket is woven in the plain weave method with a solid bottom. Several methods of filling a solid bottom will be discussed. The body of the basket incorporates a "chain weave," woven with dyed round reed in the student's choice of colors. The basket is finished with a braided and scalloped rim, woven with matching dyed reed. A choice of a hand-painted ceramic accent embellishes the basket in coordinating colors with holiday themes.
