Basketry

Shaker Cat Head Basket

Barbara Boughton

The Shaker Community, founded in New York, is known for their design aesthetic, combining form and function in simply elegant ways. This class introduces students to the Cathead base, a Shaker classic. In this form, a small, square base grows into a round basket, at the diameter and height of the student's choosing. This particular technique of weaving corners produces four "feet" upon which the basket rests. This creates a raised base on the inside of the basket, allowing its contents to first fill the perimeter of the basket, and then the center. Disbursing the weight of the basket contents, first to the perimeter, serves to prevent produce from becoming bruised and protects the center of the basket from wearing out. Students will weave a two-by-two twill pattern for both the base and the sides of the basket.

Russian Tuesi: a Solid-Sheet Birch Bark Cannister

Vladimir Yarish

This is a most special opportunity, likely a one-time offering. Having collected enough cylinders to offer the class, we are honored that Vladimir has chosen to teach his canister making class here at our school. Over the course of three days, students will learn the particular harvesting techniques necessary to construct a water-tight container, consisting of an inner cylinder of bark with an additional sheet of bark sewn with spruce roots around the cylinder. Collars on the top and bottom of the canister, also sewn with spruce root harvested and prepared by Vladimir, add structure and durability to the container. Students will carve the bottom of the container as well as the lid, which is fitted with a willow handle. This canister is indeed watertight, as the inside, being constructed from a cylinder of bark harvested with a traditional tool, contains no holes and no seams. This intriguing and historical method of constructing food containers is indeed a heritage experience not to be missed. Size varies depending on size of cylinder. Class size is limited to 12.

Fishing Creel

Barbara Boughton

Working with reed, students will weave a pot-bellied shaped basket, in the likeness of the bottom of a pack basket. Students will gain knowledge and experience in hand-shaping techniques, resulting in the classic creel shape. A hand-carved handle is woven into the rim. The lid is cut to shape from several layers of thick birch bark, used traditionally by northeast Native Americans to create folded baskets, containers and canoes. The lid is stitched together with spruce and hemlock root, which Barbara hand harvests and processes into weaving material. The size of the creel is traditionally a reminder to take only as much as is needed for the day. This creel measures approximately 12" long, 8" wide, and 6" high.

Fibonacci Thirteen

Barbara Boughton

Barbara designed this basket inspired by patterns discussed in a class on sacred geometry. The Fibonacci sequence of numbers exists in our daily world and woven together this sequence produces 13 glorious spirals. Students will begin the project by weaving a two-by-two twill base. Students will learn a technique for hand-shaping this base into a "cathead" or four-footed basket with a raised base. From there, using natural and hand-dyed reed to provide contrast, students will weave up the sides in a pattern which creates 13 spirals around the basket. Hand-shaping techniques will be stressed, allowing students to produce a beautifully proportioned piece. Along with weaving instruction, Barbara will lead a discussion on, "The Nature of Numbers", a talk on where the Fibonacci sequence exists in nature, including numerous examples.

Two Irish Willow Baskets

Bonnie Gale

In this workshop, students will explore the traditions of Irish willow baskets. The unique history and techniques of Irish willow basketry will first be discussed in class. Two baskets will be made in this class: the Sciob and the Sciathog. They are both traditionally used for straining boiled potatoes. The two baskets offer a contrast of basket technique: the Sciob is a stake-and-strand willow basket while the Sciathog is a frame basket. The Sciob Irish basket starts with the making of a large round base with a most unusual weave in the middle of the base to allow for the straining of boiled potatoes. A ring of unpeeled willow is included in the weaving. The stakes are then inserted into the base and turned up. The short siding is in three rod waling weave. A rod border completes this sturdy basket. The basket is 15 inches in diameter and is approximately 5 inches tall. The Sciathog basket starts with a prepared and dried hoop given to each student. Students will place the first set of ribs using God's Eye weaving. Randing weave continues from each side as the other sets of ribs are progressively inserted. A range of naturally processed and colored willows allows students to experiment with design variations. The Sciathog is 13 inches in diameter and 3 inches tall.

Marcia Whitt

Beginning with prepared cultured willows, students will build the framework for this lovely wall basket. Many natural materials will be provided so students can express their own personality, learning as they go how to work with purchased and found weaving materials, such as corn husks, sisal, hemp, waxed linen, seagrass, iris leaves and more. The students will be able to choose whether they want their basket to be colorful or earth tones. The finished basket may be embellished with pods, beads and other small natural finds. Students may bring items to weave into their basket or to use as embellishments. The finished basket will be approximately 22" tall.

Double-Bottomed Bushel Basket

Barbara Boughton

This is a great class for a first-time weaver, as well as for those who would like to learn some new weave patterns to create a unique piece. A variety of techniques will be discussed, including arrow weave, four-rod wale, as well as using color to create pattern. Students will begin by weaving a double-bottomed twined base. As they weave up the sides with the stop-start method, students may then choose to incorporate a variety of color and pattern which interests them. Mountain Gathering Basket

Barbara Boughton

This basket is based on a forerunner of the Nantucket Lightship basket, c. 1850. Woven on a round oak base, the spokes are inserted into a groove which holds them firmly in place. This basket employs a continuous chase weave to build the sides, using two weavers at once. The basket is hand-shaped, not woven on a mold, and students will be challenged and excited to watch their creations grow with two weavers. A hand-carved oak handle is incorporated into the rim, which finishes this rustically graceful and functional basket. It is woven on a 6" oak base which grows into a 12" diameter basket. Dimensions are approx. 10" high at sides, 16" high at handle.

Holiday Braided Rim Basket

Barbara Boughton

This basket serves equally well as a tabletop display filled with seasonal items, or as a wall basket, with an "ear" woven into the back for hanging. The basket is woven in the plain weave method with a solid bottom. Several methods of filling a solid bottom will be discussed. The body of the basket incorporates a "chain weave," woven with dyed round reed in the student's choice of colors. The basket is finished with a braided and scalloped rim, woven with matching dyed reed. A choice of a hand-painted ceramic accent embellishes the basket in coordinating colors with holiday themes.
