Double-Bottomed Bushel Basket

Barbara Boughton

This is a great class for a first-time weaver, as well as for those who would like to learn some new weave patterns to create a unique piece. Techniques discussed will include arrow weave, four-rod wale, and twill, as well as using color to create pattern. Students will begin by weaving a double-bottomed base. As they weave up the sides with the stop-start method, students may then choose to incorporate a variety of color and pattern which interests them. The basket is finished with hand-carved bushel-basket handles. With a double-bottomed base, this is a very sturdy and functional basket, as well as uniquely yours. Dimensions approx. 10"diameter, 8"high.

Two "Berry" Baskets

Beverly Cornelius

This class is a perfect introduction to basket weaving. If you have been looking for the ideal, stress-free opportunity in which to learn, this is it. Students will be introduced to continuous weaving using a Native American technique that creates a raised pattern in the finished basket. We will start the day with a small four-to five-inch basket which will give students the chance to master this technique on a simple square to round basket. The second basket will build on the technique learned in the first basket. Dyed spokes will be added and a colorful fabric handle will finish this larger seven-to eight-inch basket.

Shaker Cat Head Basket

Barbara Boughton

Shaker tradition weaves together beauty and functionality. A classic example in basketry is the "cat head" base. When storing apples and the like in a round basket the center of the bottom will weaken over time. The Shakers wove four "feet" into the base of their round baskets, which distributed the weight of its contents equally around the circumference before filling the center. From the bottom, the "feet" look like two pairs of cat ears. This class will teach the cat head base and allow students to choose the width and height of their finished piece. Some weaving experience is helpful, but not necessary. Dimensions are approximately 10-12" diameter, 6" high.

Black Ash Basketry: Harvest, Process and Weaving

Kerry Lambertson

In this class, students will create, prepare and weave black ash splint according to traditional methods practiced by native people, early settlers and Shaker communities of the northeastern woodlands. Starting from the whole ash log, we will pound free the annual rings, creating a strong and versatile weaving material called splint. Next we will prepare the splint for weaving and proceed to learning weaving techniques to create one small basket and possibly more depending upon time. No experience is required, but strong hands and wrists will be helpful.
