Basketry

Eliza Basket

Barbara Boughton

When the production manager for the "My Fair Lady" revival at Lincoln Center Theater called the Adirondack Folk School, she began with "I have a strange request...". And naturally the Folk School can craft their way out of any situation. Eliza Doolittle's basket was falling apart, and they wanted to replace it with two exact copies. Through photographs, Barbara Boughton recreated the basket, which is now featured on stage. Eliza's basket is woven on a pre-stained oak rectangular base. To recreate a vintage look, chair caning material is used for stakes and weavers. The basket is woven in a continuous weave method, using two weavers at once to build the sides. The basket is rimmed with pre-stained half-round reed, and leather bushel basket handles are crafted in class from the same English bridle leather as is used on stage. Eliza's basket is very large, and not practical for daily use, so students will weave a smaller version, which will be lovely featured at home, or used as a crossbody tote basket.

Adirondack Berry Picking and Gathering Basket

Beverly Cornelius

This basket is a variation on an Adirondack Pack Basket, one of the oldest surviving traditions inside the Adirondack Park. You will use a continuous weave technique and hand shaping to create this wonderfully useful basket. Shaker tape will be used to create a sturdy strap that will leave your hands free for blueberry picking or any other type of gathering. It also makes a great container to keep your yarn when knitting socks. This basket will be woven using reed and Shaker tape. The approximate finished size is 10 - 12" tall (width may vary). This is a challenging class with lots of hand shaping.

Feather Basket with Captured Lid

Beverly Cornelius

Feathers and down were prized and collected for pillows and mattresses, but how to keep them from blowing away? This substantial basket has a captured lid that can be raised only as far as the top of the handle. It quickly closes to secure the contents. While not many of us still collect feathers, the opening of this basket is large enough for apples or quick small picnics. Students will weave a square to round basket and then a round lid before assembling and finishing the basket. The instructor will provide dyed reed so that students may create their own pattern. Approximate finished size: 12" x 12" x 18".

Wool Drying Basket

Barbara Boughton

This traditional basket from the 1800's, with an open-work base and four legs, serves to raise its contents off the floor, allowing air to circulate within the basket. Every self-sufficient household had this multi-purpose basket for processing the sheared fleece from their sheep; first rinsing the "grease" or lanolin from the wool in hot water through the open-work base, and then allowing the fleece to dry before carding, having the wool raised above the floor. Today, this basket still has a multitude of uses, but more often holds balls of yarn, reading materials, or anything else you want conveniently located by your chair side. Weaving with reed, students will recreate this basket from the NY State Historical Society in Cooperstown, NY, bringing home a historic, functional piece. Included will be a bunch of fleece from Barbara's sheep to make your piece truly authentic! The basket is approx. 16" high, 16" diameter.

Herb-Drying Tray

Barbara Boughton

This basket uses a Shaker Cathead technique to create "feet" at the corners of the basket, which raises the base off the surface. With an open work base, the basket allows air to circulate under and within the basket, creating a perfect place to dry herbs from the garden. The rounded-rectangular shape with bushel-style handles and raised base, also creates a lovely place for storing and displaying year-round. The basket measures approx. 15" long, 10" wide, 6" high.

Fishing Creel

Barbara Boughton

Working with reed, students will weave a pot-bellied shaped basket, in the likeness of the bottom of a pack basket. Students will gain knowledge and experience in hand-shaping techniques, resulting in the classic creel shape. A hand-carved handle is woven into the rim. The lid is cut to shape from several layers of thick birch bark, used traditionally by northeast Native Americans to create folded baskets, containers and canoes. The lid is stitched together with spruce and hemlock root, which Barbara hand harvests and processes into weaving material. Carrying straps may be added using either Shaker tape or leather straps. The harness will be made during class to fit the basket. The size of the creel is traditionally a reminder to take only as much as is needed for the day. This creel measures approximately 12" long, 8" wide, and 6" high.

The basket is hand-shaped, not woven on a mold, and students will be challenged and excited to watch their creations grow with two weavers. A hand-carved oak handle is incorporated into the rim, which finishes this rustically graceful and functional basket. It is woven on a 6" oak base which grows into a 12" diameter basket. In this workshop, students will explore the traditions of Irish willow baskets. The unique history and techniques of Irish willow basketry will first be discussed in class. Two baskets will be made in this class: the Sciob and the Sciathog. They are both traditionally used for straining boiled potatoes. The two baskets offer a contrast of basket technique: the Sciob is a stake-and-strand willow basket while the Sciathog is a frame basket. The Sciob Irish basket starts with the making of a large round base with a most unusual weave in the middle of the base to allow for the straining of boiled potatoes. A ring of unpeeled willow is included in the weaving. The stakes are then inserted into the base and turned up. The short siding is in three rod waling weave. A rod border completes this sturdy basket. The basket is 15 inches in diameter and is approximately 5 inches tall. The Sciathog basket starts with a prepared and dried hoop given to each student. Students will place the first set of ribs using God's Eye weaving. Randing weave continues from each side as the other sets of ribs are progressively inserted. A range of naturally processed and colored willows allow students to experiment with design variations. The Sciathog is 13 inches in diameter and 3 inches tall.

Natural Materials Wall Pocket

Marcia Whitt

Beginning with prepared cultured willows, students will build the framework for this lovely wall basket. Many natural materials will be provided so students can express their own personality, learning as they go how to work with purchased and found weaving materials, such as corn husks, sisal, hemp, waxed linen, seagrass, iris leaves and more. The student will be able to choose whether they want their basket to be colorful or earth tones. The finished basket may be embellished with pods, beads and other small natural finds. Students may bring items to weave into their basket or to use as embellishments. The finished basket will be approximately 22" tall.

Shaker Cat Head Basket

Barbara Boughton

The Shaker Community, founded in New York, is known for their design aesthetic, combining form and function in simply elegant ways. This class introduces students to the Cathead base, a Shaker classic. In this form, a small, square base grows into a round basket, at the diameter and height of the student's choosing. This particular technique of weaving corners produces four "feet" upon which the basket rests. This creates a raised base on the inside of the basket, allowing its contents to first fill the perimeter of the basket, and then the center. Disbursing the weight of the basket contents, first to the perimeter, serves to prevent produce from becoming bruised and protects the center of the basket from wearing out. Students will weave a two-by-two twill pattern for both the base and the sides of the basket.

The Beekman Pie Carrier Basket

Beverly Cornelius

This basket was designed exclusively for the Beekman Mercantile in Sharon Springs, NY. It features a large 12" x 7" solid bottom Shaker Cathead that, when inverted, forms the cover for this pie carrier. The base is a 13" breadboard that will be provided. The instructor designed the component parts of the carrier to be used on a daily basis. The basket is for bread and fruit and the bread board is for cutting and/or serving. You need only store the handle (provided) and strap until ready to use as a pie or cake carrier. Students will weave the solid bottom base using a Shaker technique. The basket will then be pinned to a mold (provided) for weaving using a chase weave technique. Students will also learn to rivet leather to assemble the straps. The handle assembly will be provided. The finished size of the basket is 13" x 8" (without handle).

Pair of Williamsburg Baskets

Barbara Boughton

The Williamsburg basket is named for the shape of the handle which allows a square base to flare at the sides, becoming round at the rim. The Williamsburg is a lovely traditional shape and may be woven in a number of sizes. Here, students will weave 2 baskets, on a 5" handle and a 7" handle. Students will learn basic basketry skills, beginning with weaving the base for the 5" basket. Natural and hand-dyed weavers will be used to create color pattern. Having completed the 5" basket in class, students will weave the 7" handle in the afternoon. Both baskets include a hand-painted stoneware disc in a variety of colors and themes. Students leave with 2 beautiful pieces.

Holiday Braided Rim Basket

Barbara Boughton

This basket serves equally well as a tabletop display filled with seasonal items, or as a wall basket, with an "ear" woven into the back for hanging. The basket is woven in the plain weave method with a solid bottom. Several methods of filling a solid bottom will be discussed. The body of the basket incorporates a "chain weave," woven with dyed round reed in the student's choice of colors. The basket is finished with a braided and scalloped rim, woven with matching dyed reed. A choice of a hand-painted ceramic accent embellishes the basket in coordinating colors with holiday themes.
